The European data for life science infrastructure ELIXIR, has announced a collaboration with the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH). The two organisations have notably agreed on a strategy to develop and promote standards and frameworks for the responsible sharing and reuse of genomics data.
The strategy that they have agreed on will ensure that ‘ELIXIR can influence standards and technology for human genomics data sharing through GA4GH Technical Workstreams and Driver Projects’ said Serena Scollen, ELIXIR Head of Genomics and Translational Data. She also adds that these standards and tools can be added to national Nodes if they comply with national and European regulations.
The ELIXIR-GA4GH collaboration is aligned with the five-year GA4GH Connect plan to promote genomics data sharing standards and frameworks and enable sharing of genomic data in clinical practice by 2022. It is highlighted the training of ELIXIR Node members to better understand GA4GH standards to enable them to implement them in their countries is envisaged. This could increase the involvement of European countries in the GA4GH plan and expand from the US and UK focus to cover the rest of Europe.
